At this point, next to Jesus, Boaz has got to be the most famous man in the Bible and the yardstick to which every single woman should measure up a potential mate. He’s right up there with the Proverbs 31 woman. But if we take the time to read before and after the book of Ruth, there are a few other men in the Bible to seek after; one in particular is in Psalm one.
I won’t at all deny that Boaz was an amazing man with character traits that every woman should desire. He protected and honored Ruth, reverenced and respected her and then put a ring on it! But can I introduce you to a man that has no famous name or story, but character traits that also exude a true man of God:
Meet Mr. Psalm One:
Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
There is no name associated with Mr. Psalm One, and honestly the word “man” can be interchanged with “woman;” but it allows you to seek after the traits of the man more than a name. We have glorified the name Boaz and put him on a pedastool, quick to tell a man, “but you not my Boaz, though,” yet, we’re not really clear on our own identity and names ourselves.
Can I challenge you to let go of the name Boaz, and simply seek after a godly man, one that delights in the Lord and his law. Too many women are settling with men whose paths line up with sinners rather than the godly. I’ve been there! He delights in the world more than he delights in God. His roots aren’t planted and is blown away when trials come against him. His fruit is not of the spirit and his leaves are withering.
Ladies, let’s seek after Mr. Psalm One. No name, just roots and a heart planted in God. Let God give him a name and tailor make him just for you!
