I sit and wait for summer like a kid in a candy store. I get beyond excited because Its beach season! The water, the sun, and the sand put my mind at ease and my worries on the back burner. And its also perfect road trip season!
A few of my girlfriends and I decided to hit the road and head to Rehoboth beach in Rehoboth, Delaware. My favorite beach! It’s clean, has great restaurants, and did I mention it’s clean?
It was a two and a half hour ride that was sure to bring laughs, great conversation, and impromptu karaoke to Beyonce and William Murphy; saved girls who like gospel with a shot of trap music! No judging here!
Road trips are nothing without food, fun, and did I mention food!
Road Trip Eating
Because weekends are made for brunch, we decided to make a pit stop before hitting the beach. We are foodies at heart!
We came upon a rural town with a building that simply said “Southern Grille.” My friend immediately did a U-Turn. We couldn’t go wrong with any restaurant that had “southern” in it, and we were right! We’d gotten there at a perfect time. We waited approximately 10 mins, and the line was out the door. A great sign!
Our waitress was a older white woman who reminded me of Rose Nylan from Golden Girls. She was the sweetest lady, but a bit ditzy and couldn’t hear to save her life! I was just waiting on her to tell a story from St. Olive!
I ordered eggs, sausage, and pancakes for $6 that I promise you somebody’s grandmother made in the back!! As we paid our bill, we also found it was black owned! Winning!
On the beach, I enjoyed an ice-cream cone from one of the famous boardwalk favorites, The Ice Cream Store. It has over 100 options of flavors including, “Better Than Sex,” “Death By Peanut Butter,” and “Crack.” My friend got “Crack,” and let me tell you, it was amazing!
Making it a full day, we did dinner further down on the boardwalk at Cooter Browns. Another southern kitchen cuisine. Yes, we are black! So, what! The food was great. The service was subpar because of the lack of servers, hence the hiring sign on the front door as we walked in. We endured the wait, and it was worth it. I had a catfish po’boy with French fries that did me just right!
Road Trip Planning
We made a clutch decision to park at a kiss & ride and take the DART, an express bus that takes you right to the beach, bypassing all the traffic we were initially stuck in. It’s nothing like allowing someone else to chauffeur you around with air condition youdon’t have to burn. And the tickets were only $4 round trip for an all day pass.We were road tripping on a budget! Again, winning!
As we approached the beach, it was blanketed by a beautiful sea of umbrellas in various colors and sizes, and people of all races and nationalities. We set up our chairs and enjoyed the sun. We possibly had to be the only black girls with no umbrella who actually liked to lay out in the sun! I brought my book I was itching to finish, The People Factor by Van Moody, and I was ready to get a super tan in the process.
Road Trip Fun
To top off our amazing beach day, which was on 4th of July weekend, we finished dinner just in time to sit and watch the fireworks show from the boardwalk. It was a beautiful show with a live soundtrack of American classics playing from the stage.
Our impromptu beach road trip was a success, no drama, and our tans were LIT! I can’t wait for my next trip! Summer is in full effect!
